Poppystamps and Memory Box Blog Hop

Memory Box and PoppyStamps are having a joint blog hop.  There are prizes, to find out how to win hop on over to the Poppystamps Blog page for all the information.  This blog hop begins today and ends on December 4th.  You have until the 10th of December to enter.  Good luck everyone!

If you came to my blog page from
You are traveling in the right direction.....

Now on to a bit about my place card.....

I like to have handmade place cards for guests. This year, for Christmas I am making place cards that can be used later as a decoration. Let me first give you the dimensions of the frame, which by the way is exactly the same as the one I use for my mini-calendars. Cut a piece of card stock to 4 x 12 inches. Score at 4 inches, 8 inches, 9 3/4 inches and 11 1/2 inches. Fold and glue to form the frame.

Now on to decorating..... I die cut the Mod Snowflake Background on glitter card stock.

I then ran a piece of white card stock through my Xyron machine. You could also use spray glue.

The size of white card stock I used was about 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches.  Now glue the Mod Snowflake Background (#1034) to your piece of glued white cardstock. You might be asking what white card stock?  I only see red. Well, after you glue your Mod Snowflake to the white card stock, you will have sticky everywhere the die did not make contact with the card stock. As you can see, I chose red glitter to cover all the sticky openings. Trim your glittered piece to 3 7/8 x 3 7/8 and glue this piece to your frame and decorate.

I chose the Snow Flocked Tree die (#1096) and added chunky glitter. I die cut the Vintage Merry Christmas (# 1105) on a thick glitter cardstock. And it released beautifully. Note: All machines cut differently. Sometimes you will need a shim, even if your cardstock is thick. My little deer is from Memory Box. It is one of my most cherished dies. It's called Leaping Deer (No 98390). I will write the name of each guest my little deer. I added ribbon, a bit of bling and a bell. This place card is complete. I'm sure you will find many different ways to decorate your place card. If you create one, please email me to let me know. I'd love to see what you've created.

I'm going to share my top secret peanut brittle recipe....so don't tell a soul!  Promise!  I've been making this every Christmas for probably (yikes, more years than I want to remember...) I'm guessing at least 30 years and probably more.

There are two hints and these hints will make your peanut brittle perfect, every time!  First:  Don't cheat on the heat.  You MUST cook the mixture to 240 degrees prior to adding the peanuts and the butter.  And then you MUST continue cooking until you've reached 300 degrees.  Second:  Spread your candy mixture so that it is as thin as you can get it.  If you follow these two rules you'll have PERCECT  peanut brittle. (Sorry there is no photo.  I haven't made any yet this year.  It's on my schedule for mid-December.  I'll try to remember to post a photo soon.)

Have all the ingredients and tools ready before you begin.....

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1 cup light corn syrup
3 tablespoons butter
1 pound salted peanuts

Butter:  2 cookie sheets and put them into a warm oven.
In a small bowl combine:  baking soda, 1 teaspoon water and vanilla.  Set this aside
In a heavy sauce pan combine:  sugar,  1 cup of water, and corn syrup.

Cook the sugar, water and corn syrup until the temperature reaches 240 degrees.  Stir occasionally
Stir in the butter and peanuts and continue cooking until the temperature reaches 300 degrees.  Stir continually.  This mixture will easily burn if you don't stir.

Remove from heat and stir in the baking soda mixture.  Your heated mixture will bubble up, don't be afraid it's supposed to.

Immediately pour onto the two cookie sheets and spread to a thin layer.  I use the back of a spoon to do this.  This is where an extra set of hands are very helpful.  I spread to about 1/4 inch.  Cool and break candy into pieces.

Never double this recipe or any candy recipe.

If you are following the hop in order, your next stop is a visit to

The Twinery, Poppystamps and Me

Ha, I thought this would get your attention.....
If you came to me from DoBea Alberts blog page you already know about this FABULOUS HOP....if you started here......Here's the scoop, Poppystamps and The Twinery have joined forces between July 24th and July 26th for a blog hop....I was so excited to be able to participate.  So, here's a card I made for my daughter's birthday.  Blossom stripe is the Twinery twine on the front of the card.  I added seed beads to the twine and the Poppystamps  butterfly dies.  Do you know which ones they are?  Hint...keep reading!  You are going to see the Happy Birthday background die used often.  Boy does it make creating birthday cards easy and very quick.  And what's on the inside?  The Wild Rose Bud die, butterflies and the Leafy Sprig border make this card complete.

Do you want to see another?  This card is the same, but  different....
Lots more twine this time  I used Cantaloupe Stripe twine, even the name is yummy!   See how I punched a tiny hole and brought the twine through it.  This time I put tiny seed beads on the ends.  I used the Delaney and the Chevlot Butterfly and some decorative pins and I love it....and the inside:

I decided to use letters that fell from the Birthday Background die.  I added the Dianna Border and some Cantaloup twine with a bead in the center of  the twine.   You know waste not want not.   This card was made for my crafting buddy, Cathy.  Happy Birthday Cathy!

OK....grab your coffee....I'm on a roll! Want to see another card? If not.....turn away now.... :-)
This card I made for my friend Thelma.  For this card I used Honey Dew twine, I think it added lot's of interest to this card.  My Poppystamps dies are:  My newest butterflies....did you see the name above?  If not, let's play, I spy with my little eye!  See it now?  and I used Classic Ribbons, with a sentiment I typed on my computer.  My window is the Grand Madison French Door.  I'm using it as a French window.... :-)  And of course more beads....can never have too many of those you know!
I kept the inside pretty simple, I wanted to leave room for a little note.  Again I used the Classic Ribbons die and more Honey Dew Twinery Twine.  Yup, and more beads.

My favorite son-in-law's birthday was the perfect time to use twine and my birthday background die. Linn says he's my only son-in-law and therefore he is automatically my favorite.....he'd be my favorite if there were 10 of them... :-)
I like that this die and the Twinery twine can be used for men or women...Boys or girls....I added a gear to the twine and it's ready to post....well, after I show you the inside....
My daughter is a photographer and I thought adding the film strip die brought a bit of her into the card too.  I think the twine added the perfect touch.  I knotted the ends of the twine.  I like that the Birthday background die can be cut on solid or patterned card stock and it's pretty both ways.

I have to say twine is a welcomed addition to my card making treasure box. Twine adds one more layer of dimension and interest  and not a lot of bulk.  I hope you'll try twine too, and if you do, send me  a photo and I'll post it.  Be sure to check out The Twinery Shop and the Poppystamps shop  and follow along with today's  DT creations:

Poppystamps Tag Hop and Peanut Brittle Recipe

I'm excited to share the news.  Today is the Poppystamps Tag Hop and I'm very happy to share my little tags....
I like making little gift bags, and my favorite candy to place inside is peanut brittle.  I don't think this bag will make it to Christmas.  One Mr. has been asking when I'll be done taking the photo! This bag is so easy to create and it's always nice to have a few around for those unexpected guests that arrive.

I've been making this peanut brittle for 40 years and I've never made a bad batch.  I'd love sharing the recipe with you.  A candy making hint....Always have all the ingredients ready.  Never double the batch.  Always use an accurate thermometer and cook to the exact temperature.  If you do this, you'll have perfect candy....

Mary Mac's Peanut Brittle

The key to the brittleness is to spread the candy mixture thinly.  Don't cheat on heat.  You must cook to 240 degrees prior to adding the peanuts and butter...and 300 degrees before removing from heat.  Follow the rules and you'll have perfect peanut brittle.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon water
1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 cup light corn syrup
3 tablespoons butter
1 pound salted peanuts (I use Planters Cocktail Peanuts)

Butter 2 cookie sheets and put them into a warm oven.  Mix the baking soda, water together and set aside.  In a large heavy bottomed saucepan, Combine: 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1 cup water, and 1 cup corn syrup.  Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally to 240 degrees on a candy thermometer.  Stir into the mixture 3 tablespoons butter and 1 pound of peanuts.  Continue cooking and stir constantly to 300 degrees.  Note:  at this stage it can burn quickly, so keep stirring.  Remove from heat and stir in the baking soda mixture and the vanilla.  Pour onto the two buttered cookie sheets and spread to no thicker than 1/4 inch.  Cool and break candy into pieces.  Store in air tight container.

I don't know where this recipe originally came from.  I think maybe it was one of the many recipes my mom clipped from a magazine or newspaper and then re-wrote.

I hope you give this a try, and if you do, please let me know how it turned out.  I hope you will be pleased.

I have another tag to share, I made this one to add to my husband's Christmas gift.  I may make a few more of these.  It's an easy one to make.  Note, I cut both red and the white base together.  To get the tail, I used the word Merry as my layout guide.  I made a light mark about 1/2 inch from the bottom and used the "R" as my center point.  Then I rounded the corners.... a little glitter and some ribbon and it's done.
Because both sides will be visible I wanted the back to look finished.

I hope you have time to hop along with the Poppystamps Design Team.  You can follow us here:

Well, I think it's time for me to head over and see what the girls have created.  There just might be some prizes, you can read all about it on the Poppystamps Blog page.

Can you believe Christmas is right around the corner?  I hope everyone is enjoying the season and not stressing too much!

Wishing you a calm and crafty week!
Mary

Happy World Card Making Day!

It's World Card Making Day......I'm sure all around the World, cutters are cutting, embossers are embossing, glue is gluing and crafters are smiling!  I know in my world that's what is happening.  And I know that in the  Poppystamps world there is much celebrating and this card is what I made.

The theme of the Poppystamps blog hop is friendship....now what does this card say about friendship?  I'll tell you....The Charming Stars die, signifies the four directions on a compass.  Through my blog posts, I've met people from around the world.  Most I've met, through their posts.   Through our comments back and forth, I feel a bond of friendship.  Over the past years I've shared the births of children and grandchildren, marriages, sickness and even the sadness of death.  I've also learned about different cultures through the cards others made.  So today we celebrate with the talented people from around the world who put a little of themselves in each card they create.

My design team friends at Poppystamps are celebrating in a big way.  We are having a blog hop.  If you are following along on the blog hop, you should have found me by visiting Lezlye Lauterbach  If this is your first stop along this World Card Making Day hop, and you want to start from the beginning, hop over to the Poppystamps Blog page.  You can find out all about the hop and the prizes, you heard me p-r-i-z-e-s......we all like that word don't we!  I know I sure do!

This card was made from bits and pieces, well mostly.  The sparkly white pieces are what fell from the white sparkly frame I'd cut earlier.  and the red inside is a snippet...

Trust me, it wasn't originally meant to be a snippet, but when I was die cutting, I didn't have the paper lined up properly and the top was cut off.  So, I made lemonade from the oops moment.  I really think this was a happy accident.

Before I say thanks for visiting my blog page and I say goodbye for today, I want to tell you the next stop on this World Card Making Day blog hop is Michele Henderson.  Hop on over to visit Michele and don't forget to comment on this post, who knows....maybe you'll win!

Happy Crafting.....and Hugs from my side of the world! And a MOST HAPPY WORLD CARD MAKING DAY!
